Let’s just take a moment to look at that cover… breathe it in. Ok. And now let’s pick apart the blurb and try not to drool in anticipation:
For fans of Holly Black and Nova Ren Suma, a gripping, hauntingly atmospheric novel about murder, revenge, and a world where monsters—human and otherwise—lurk at the fringes.
Stop there. Already comparing it to two authors I admire and trust. Check.
Using some of my favourite buzzwords and phrases: ‘hauntingly atmospheric’ ‘murder’ ‘lurk’ – yup. I’m already interested. And I LOVE books that explore the monstrous both fantastical and human.
When seventeen-year-old Breezy Lin wakes up in a shallow grave one year after her death, she doesn’t remember who killed her or why. All she knows is that she’s somehow conscious—and not only that, she’s able to sense who around her is hiding a murderous past.
YAAAS! I mean, firstly, as a writer I wish I’d created that name for a character. ‘Breezy Lin’? Love it. It’s so over the top but it doesn’t make you cringe. Perfection. And then hello? She wakes up in a grave and has to Buffy her self out? I assume. (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, season 6, totally epic) And this undead girl can also sense who’s hiding something naughty? She can see the skeletons in your damn closet. Wicked.
In life, Breezy was always drawn to the elegance of the universe and the mystery of the stars. Now she must set out to find answers and discover what is to become of her in the gritty, dangerous world to which she now belongs—where killers hide in plain sight and a sinister cult…
WHOA! STOP RIGHT THERE! WE HAVE A CULT! *claxon* CULT ALERT!
This is so much ‘yes’ for me. I’m fascinated by cult fanaticism. I hope this ‘sinister’ cult proves to be as extreme as I’m imagining.
…is hunting for strange creatures like her. What she finds is at once empowering, redemptive, and dangerous.
Tense, complex, and wholly engaging, Shallow Graves is a stunning first novel from Kali Wallace.
This book is so up my street. I can’t wait to give it a whirl.
Shallow Graves by Kali Wallace – expected 26th January 2016 – Katherine Tegen Books
