BookBlogWriMo #20 – #TBT – Best Books of 2014

This is going to take a while! Ha! I’m going to try and collate a list of my favourite reads from this year. Click the cover art for Goodreads pages.

I think I can say that this is THE BOOK OF THE YEAR for me. Caps lock necessary. I was worried at first that it was going to be ‘too SF’, if such a thing is possible. More boyish than I’m used to, perhaps. But, hell, I shouldn’t have worried. I loved the characters, the set-up (shock!), the way the story progresses, the lore and world building. Everything. It’s fantastic. Click here for my original review.

The Earth is dying. Darrow is a Red, a miner in the interior of Mars. His mission is to extract enough precious elements to one day tame the surface of the planet and allow humans to live on it. The Reds are humanity’s last hope.

Or so it appears, until the day Darrow discovers it’s all a lie. That Mars has been habitable – and inhabited – for generations, by a class of people calling themselves the Golds. A class of people who look down on Darrow and his fellows as slave labour, to be exploited and worked to death without a second thought.

Until the day that Darrow, with the help of a mysterious group of rebels, disguises himself as a Gold and infiltrates their command school, intent on taking down his oppressors from the inside. But the command school is a battlefield – and Darrow isn’t the only student with an agenda.

I thought I loved the first book in the ‘Wait For You’ series. Nah. I was wrong. This was true book love right here. I’m such a hardcore fan of J Lynn and her NA titles. Something about the formula (and that’s not to say that these books are ‘formulaic’ because they’re not. At all) really works for me. I loved the twists and turns this story took. And I swooned… hard. Clicky for my review 🙂

Teresa Hamilton is having a rough year—she’s in love with her big brother’s best friend, but he hasn’t spoken to her since they shared a truly amazing, mind-blowing, change-your-life kiss. She got out of a terrible relationship. And now an injury is threatening to end her dance career for good. It’s time for Plan B – college. And maybe a chance to convince Jase that what they have together is real.

Jase Winstead has a huge secret that he’s not telling anyone. Especially not his best friend’s incredibly beautiful sister. Even though he and Teresa shared the hottest kiss of his life, he knows that his responsibilities must take priority. He certainly doesn’t have time for a relationship. But it doesn’t help that all he can think about kissing the one girl who could ruin everything for him.

As they’re thrown together more and more, Jase and Tess can’t keep denying their feelings for each other. But a familiar danger looms and tragedy strikes. As the campus recovers, the star-crossed couple must decide what they’re willing to risk to be together, and what they’re willing to lose if they’re not…

Ooh. This one surprised me. It had a wobbly start, but once I got stuck into the book proper, it proved freakin’ addictive. An epic fantasy setting and I adored the characters and world building. I was sad that the main pair didn’t get more time together on the page… Sad times. I cannot WAIT to read the next book though. *bounces excitedly* aaand here’s my review. Click!

For five centuries, a witch’s curse has bound the trolls to their city beneath the ruins of Forsaken Mountain. Time enough for their dark and nefarious magic to fade from human memory and into myth. But a prophesy has been spoken of a union with the power to set the trolls free, and when Cécile de Troyes is kidnapped and taken beneath the mountain, she learns there is far more to the myth of the trolls than she could have imagined.

Cécile has only one thing on her mind after she is brought to Trollus: escape. Only the trolls are clever, fast, and inhumanly strong. She will have to bide her time, wait for the perfect opportunity.

But something unexpected happens while she’s waiting – she begins to fall for the enigmatic troll prince to whom she has been bonded and married. She begins to make friends. And she begins to see that she may be the only hope for the half-bloods – part troll, part human creatures who are slaves to the full-blooded trolls. There is a rebellion brewing. And her prince, Tristan, the future king, is its secret leader.

As Cécile becomes involved in the intricate political games of Trollus, she becomes more than a farmer’s daughter. She becomes a princess, the hope of a people, and a witch with magic powerful enough to change Trollus forever.

Oh my. This book stole my heart and I’m practically green with envy when I see someone has been granted with an ARC of the next book! *seethes… mutters through gritted teeth.. waggles fingers* Gimme! Gimme! The way everything builds on itself in this story is so… enthralling. My review went a little OTT, perhaps, but you can click through to see it anyway.

Winning what you want may cost you everything you love

As a general’s daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions.

One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin’s eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him—with unexpected consequences. It’s not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin.

But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkoski is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

Mm. Hmm hmm. *chuckles* The Warden does it again. I was so ecstatic to be back seeing things from Wrath’s perspective in this installment. I’m not sure I’d say it was my favourite of the BDB, but I devoured it in one (long) sitting. I didn’t go to sleep that night… Just read. And that’s always the sign of a good book, no? Reviewingz.

Long live the King…

After turning his back on the throne for centuries, Wrath, son of Wrath, finally assumed his father’s mantle–with the help of his beloved mate. But the crown sets heavily on his head. As the war with the Lessening Society rages on, and the threat from the Band of Bastards truly hits home, he is forced to make choices that put everything–and everyone–at risk.

Beth Randall thought she knew what she was getting into when she mated the last pure blooded vampire on the planet: An easy ride was not it. But when she decides she wants a child, she’s unprepared for Wrath’s response–or the distance it creates between them.

The question is, will true love win out… or tortured legacy take over?

Hold On - FINAL reveal

God. Did I mention how much I love this series? There are just no words. I would do anything for this series to keep going forever… (click for my first thoughts on it)

Beautiful and successful Alexa Reed has dark secrets in her past that prevent her from trusting in love. Her fears start to fade when she meets charismatic, South Beach hotel owner, Julian Bauer, who is willing to put his extravagant playboy lifestyle behind him just to be with her.

He’s a man who likes a challenge.

Alexa’s newfound bliss is still fragile as she struggles to deal with the trauma of her ex-boyfriend’s death. Is Julian’s love for Alexa strong enough to heal her emotional scars and convince her their love is real?

Alexa is not the only one with secrets and what’s to come threatens to destroy their future together. Now it’s Julian who needs Alexa more than ever. Will she be able to hold on?

Definitely up there with one of my favourites in this series so far. I loved the change in setting and the injection of a new secondary character set. Love. Book love. That’s what it is. See what I mean?

In The Fiery Heart, Sydney risked everything to follow her gut, walking a dangerous line to keep her feelings hidden from the Alchemists.

Now in the aftermath of an event that ripped their world apart, Sydney and Adrian struggle to pick up the pieces and find their way back to each other. But first, they have to survive.

For Sydney, trapped and surrounded by adversaries, life becomes a daily struggle to hold on to her identity and the memories of those she loves. Meanwhile, Adrian clings to hope in the face of those who tell him Sydney is a lost cause, but the battle proves daunting as old demons and new temptations begin to seize hold of him. . . .

Their worst fears now a chilling reality, Sydney and Adrian face their darkest hour in this heart-pounding fifth installment in the New York Times bestselling Bloodlines series, where all bets are off.

This was hard! There were so many more I wanted to mention… and I probably could have kept going until this list truly got out of hand! xD

What about you? It’s been a great year of reading for me, with much more happy reading days to come. I mean, I’m hoping Santa gets my Xmas list. It’s full of books. It’s gonna be heavy!
